Authority
Both
the steel fixing channels and the substrate used for the Steeltone
slats comply with BS 2989:1982 'Specification for continuously hot
dip zinc coated and iron-zinc alloy coated steel: wide strip, sheet/plate
and slit wide strip'.
The Colorcoat Plastisol standard range of colours complies with BS
4904:1978(1985) ' Specification for external cladding colours for
building purpose'.

Description
Composition,
manufacture
Steeltone slats and fixing channels are manufactured from hot-dipped
galvanised steel. The U-section fixing channels are manufactured with
nibs which act as retaining clips for the sound-absorbing membrane
and the facing slats.
Facing slats finished with Colorcoat Plastisol are coated with PVC
200 microns thick, with a grey paint finish on the reverse. |
| |
Shape
Steeltone
slats are supplied in strip form with a flat face and angled returns.
Fixing channels are U-section. |
| |
Size
Slat
face width: 50mm. 18 slats give approximately 1 metre cover width.
Supplied in cut lengths as required, standard 2.8m up to 4m in one
piece; where greater lengths are required, jointing pieces are supplied.
Fixing channel: length, 2408mm; depth, 24mm.
Infill
Infill materials shall comprised of: mineral-wool insulation is supplied
in slabs 1200mm x 60mm x 25mm thick. (minimum)
Sonatex Basic acoustic screen is supplied in rolls of 100m.
Appearance
Colorcoat Plastisol is a PVC coating with face finish textured resembling
open-grained leather. |
| |
Accessories
A
wide variety of accessories can be provided including hardwood trims,
skirtings and frames and associated joinery. For special applicatiosns,
flat plate fixing strips can be provided, for example in lining curved
walls or where slats are to be fitted to doors. Jointing sleeves can
be provided where lengths of slat require jointing end-to-end so that
total lengths greater than 4cm can be achieved. |
| |
Performance
Resistance
to mechanical damage
The finish is highly durable and resistant
to abrasion. The slats are capable of taking direct fixings for
items such as fire bells, pictures etc.
Fire
Steeltone slats and fixing channels are non-combustible.
The glass fibre infill conformed to BS 476: Part 4:1970.
Resistance
to moisture
The finish provide good resistance to
corrosion.
Resistance to biological attack
Steeltone is resistant to attack by inserts,
fungi or vermin.
|
 |
Resistance
to ultra-violet light
The finish are unaffected by ultraviolent
light even after long periods of exposure.
Acoustic
Table 5 shows the sound absorption coefficients
that will be achieved using Plastisol-finished Steeltone with 25mm
mineral-wool insulation between the fixing channels and screen membrane
laid over the top; tested by the Department of Applied Acoustics,
University of Salford.

Electrical
properties
In certain situations, where electrical services
are to be concealed behind the Steeltone with switches etc on the
face of the slats, careful consideration must be given to the arrangements
for earth bonding of the fixing channels and slats and automatic
disconnection of supply in the event of equipment failure. For further
details either refer to the Technical Services Department or the
IEE Regulatiosns for electrical Installations 1981.
Durability
When installed correctly, Steeltone will provide a life in use equal
to that of the building.
Workability
Steeltone slats and fixing channels can be cut to size on site using
suitable metal shears, snips or a nibbler.
Maintenance
Steeltone offers a highly-durable finish requiring the minimum of
maintenance. The finish can offer as much as 40 years' service,
needing no more than occasional cleaning with a mild detergent solution.
Abrasive cleaning agents or those containing strong solvents should
be avoided.
|
| |
Applications
Steeltone is
designed for use internally on flat and curved walls and ceilings.
It can be installed with the slats running vertically, horizontally
or diagonally as required. It is suitable for all types of building,
but it is particularly suitable where tough wear as well as good
acoustic performance is needed.
Specification
When drawing up a specification, it will be found useful to use
the following as a check-list:

Type of finish
Colour of finish required
Dimensions of area to be clad
Any splice plates, matching hardwood trims, skirtings, frames etc |

Sitework
Handling and
storage
The slats are supplied nested in pairs and packed
in bundles; the fixing channels are supplied packed in bundles. They
should be carried by two men. The packages should be stored flat and
off the ground in a dry ventilated place. Insulation material is supplied
in pack of 12 slabs, wrapped in polythene. Sonatex Basic acoustic
screen membrane is supplied in 100m rolls, also wrapped in polythene.
Installation
Installation should not commence until all wet
trades have been completed and the building suitably heated and dried
out.
Careful setting-out will ensure that installation
proceeds smoothly. It must be remembered that the nibs on the fixing
channels should be precisely aligned to accept the slats. Fixing channels
are screwed at 650mm centres to walls; slightly reduced centres may
be used on soffits. Fixings both to walls and soffit can be made direct.
Once the channels are fixed, the insulation material can be placed
between them and the acoustic screen laid over the entire surface
and retained by the nibs.
Steeltone can be supplied with flat face plate fixing strips which
allow it to be fixed to curved as well as flat surfaces. |
| |
Maintenance
Cleaning
Steeltone provides an extremely-durable and maintenance-free surface
that will require only very occasional cleaning with a mild detergent
solution. Abrasive cleaning agents or those containing strong solvents
should never be used.
Repair
In the event of a slat being subject to serious accidental damage,
it can be unclipped from the fixing channel and replaced. |
